According to the report, former Russian-installed mayor of Luhansk region, Manolis Pilavov, has been killed in a suicide bomb attack, the Russian TASS news agency reported on Thursday. According to the report, Pilavov was blown up by a female suicide bomber. Ukraine’s Security Service, SBU, claimed responsibility for the killing, reminding in a statement that Pilavov had been on the wanted list of Ukrainian intelligence agencies since 2015. The explosion occurred around noon on July 3 on Taras Shevchenko Street in the center of Luhansk city. Authorities in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic stated that one person was killed and three others were injured as a result of the explosion. According to unconfirmed reports, the explosive device was planted behind the door of a building.
The report also said that the Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case over the attack. Manolis Pilavov headed the administration of Luhansk from December 2014 to November 2023. In 2015, Ukraine’s Security Service placed Pilavov on the wanted list under three criminal code articles (violent overthrow of the constitutional order, encroachment on Ukraine's territorial integrity, and creation of a terrorist organization). After Russia’s capture of Luhansk in 2014, he actively supported the militants in the region and became one of the ideologists of the self-proclaimed republic.
