When you add a memory card, you would just need to transfer some things from the phone memory to the card for the phone to work properly.
Do you use the file manager or some other tool to move the photo and other files quickly from the phone memory to the memory card memory?
You can easily download third party file managers to help with all of that. ES File explorer is certainly a good option.
For some people, they buy SF cards when they buy their phones because they feel the memory size of their phones won't be enough for what they use their phone to do.

Memory card is something I can never do without. I am fond of formatting my phone from time to time, so I usually keep my important details in my memory card.
When ever I buy a new phone I buy a memory card also. Its like a must for me. Then I always have google cloud to safe keep all my important stuff. It sucks losing your valibale information when phone gets stolen or gets lost.
I think the using of an external SD card has anything to do with the increasing of the android devices as being put up here, What SD card normally does is to create enough space for your downloaded files so that it can free up space on devices.
