Using smartphones without sim

Usually a monthly or other plan has to be purchased for every sim while a one time payment is required for a smartphone, especially low end smartphone. For what applications can the smartphone be used without a sim?

A smartphone is almost as good as useless with a sim card. You can't make calls or even access the Internet, unless you have the phone connected to a wifi or hotspot.

I am using the older smartphone without sim, since it is not starting with the sim. Most of the apps are working properly without the sim using wifi.

If you have a router, you can easily use a smartphone without a sim card. Even a pocket wifi can power such phones and you make calls through Instant Messaging apps.
