Here we go!
The Vatican has returned sixty-two objects that belonged to indigenous peoples in Canada. They said it was a true sign of respect and brotherhood.

Pope Leo presented the jewels to the Canadian bishops. The bishops have promised to deliver the objects to the indigenous communities of Canada as soon as possible.

The objects were sent to Rome in 1925 for exhibition.

This is the latest in a series of responses from the Catholic Church.

In 2022, Pope Francis apologized to indigenous peoples in Canada for the abuses of missionary schools.

Canada's foreign minister said the move was important to respect culture and promote reconciliation.

I believe that these kinds of gestures, however positive, still leave many questions about the Church's sincerity and genuine commitment to Indigenous communities. The return of historical artifacts may be an important symbolic step, but concrete actions are also needed to address the deep wounds that still exist, such as the abusive missionary schools and cultural loss. The 2022 apology was a step in the right direction, but the reconciliation process requires much more than symbolic gestures; it needs policy changes, recognition, and real support for the affected communities. I hope that this return of artifacts is only one part of a broader and more genuine process of reparation and respect for Indigenous cultures. Without sustained commitment and concrete actions, these gestures may seem like mere symbolism without any real impact.
