According to the report, Russian Tanker Sinks in Black Sea Spilling Over 4,000 Tonnes of Oil . A Russian oil tanker carrying thousands of tonnes of oil products split apart during a heavy storm on December 15.
The report said that the incident led to a massive oil spill in the Kerch Strait east of Crimea. A second tanker was also in distress after sustaining damage, Russian officials said.
The report added that Russian investigators opened two criminal cases to look into possible safety violations after at least one person was killed when the 136-meter Volgoneft 212 tanker, with 15 people on board, split in half with its bow sinking.
In addition to the report, Ukrainian officials accused Russia of recklessness in operating old oil tankers. Both the tankers involved in the incident are reported to be over 50 years old. Russian President Vladimir Putin has set up a committee to mitigate the impact of oil spill following the incident.
