The brand name itself is one factor to consider in buying a new laptop. Don't buy a laptop that has no good reputation yet. It's crucial.
Selecting a depends on the type of work you are going to do on your laptop. Some technical people need to download heavy data and software they need a laptop with more memory space and RAM.
Only when I can't run some software or game on it, right now I'm going to have to get another one for myself with a better system because I'm already having difficulties running things to work on it.
That is how HP sells inferior laptops simply because they have a brand name. You would always overpay if you buy brand name.

My laptop is Acer and Apple. They are branded which is why expensive but performance wise excellent. They may serve me for many years. My Acer is 2 years old and the Apple brand 6 years.
Personally, I don't compromise on the RAM of the laptop that I want to buy. And then, the graphics card too
