I am managing an organisation and we have a staff that is so competent in his job but problematic. He failed to show up for work on Saturday, and that is after I had called to remind him to come early, of which he assured me he would come early.

He didn't show up at all. I fired him and I am about to process his salary for the days of the month he has worked, so I pay him off.

Was I being too erratic? If it were you, what would you do?

Firing a competent but problematic employee is tough. If it was a one-time incident, a formal warning might have sufficed. If it's a recurring issue, termination is more justified. Given your situation, if it were me, I'd first issue a formal warning and implement a performance improvement plan. If the behavior continued, I'd then proceed with termination.

You have nailed it on the head. Give the person a second chance. But when the chance does not change anything, please go ahead to fire the person.

There should be a consideration. Saturday isn't a working day. In my place an employee receives a double pay if work on a Saturday
That worker you fired might be an Adventist. It's against their religion to work on a Saturday.

For situations like this, there are usually rules in place, which the staffs are aware of before accepting the job. So the rules should be followed.

The business should have a vivid disciplinary committee that can deal with the gross misconduct among the employees.
That's a good one. This way the manager or business owner won't have to deal with things like this directly all the time.
