What do you do when your computer malfunctions?

If your laptop or desktop computer malfunctions do you try to fix it yourself or do you go to the local computer repair shop? How much time should a person spend trying to get the computer repaired at home?

In situations like this, if it is something I can handle on my own, then I will try to sort it out at home. It is something I know needs an expert I won't even try to fix it myself.
