I cannot share an experience because I am not interested on freelancing job. Why don't you apply as a visual assistant? There's always hiring.
As a freelance writer I always find it depends on luck. I got a lot of work for 15 years and earned well but was cheated as well.

I have been working as a freelancer for almost 8 years. When I first started, I relied on referrals from business associates. As I become more popular, word of mouth is good to get new clients. I seldom work for freelance sites because the competition is fierce, and the pay is low.
To get freelance work you must have a good portfolio and also have a good profile reputation then client will come hiring you often
