This issue got me thinking deeper. While some say pulling yourself up by your bootstraps through hard work alone can beat poverty, I'm not sure it's that simple. Sure, dedication and effort are important. But what about those stuck in cycles for reasons beyond their control? And doesn't the system need to be fair for all that hard work to even matter?
Growing up in lack probably takes a permanent toll. The stress of daily struggle can overwhelm your capacity to focus on moving ahead. If basic survival is all you know, how do you see beyond it?
I'm curious what others think. Is there a role for community here beyond telling young people to simply try harder? How can we create a society where every person gets a fair chance through no fault of their own circumstances? What else do you think is needed, besides hard work alone, to overcome the challenges of living in poverty?
