What gives money it's value?

We have been hearing about money gaining value and also losing value. Looking at it closely, what are the factors that gives money the value or even has? Does money have value on it's own? What are the factors from which money derives it's value from?

Yes the purchasing power of money gives it value. Like my currency has no value now because it's purchasing power is very low
