What happened to Windows phones?

At a time, Microsoft entered into the mobile phones market with Windows phones. And it seem that move failed. What really happened that Microsoft failed with Windows phones. Did you ever use a Windows phone? Was it good enough?

Microsoft failed with Windows Phone mainly because it never managed to attract great application developers. The hardware and interface were good, but the lack of a strong ecosystem made it unattractive for the common user. I tried a Windows Phone at the time and the experience was quite fluid. Even so, the disadvantage was noticeable against Android and iOS in terms of variety and support.
