The I Love You Virus, also known as the Love Bug, was a notorious computer worm that spread rapidly in May 2000.

Here's what happened:
  • Infection method;
  • Impact;

The infection method spread through email with the subject “I LOVE YOU” and an attached file that, when opened, executed the worm.

The impact was, once it was activated, it overwrote files, sent copies of itself to everyone on the victim’s email contact list, and caused widespread damage to millions of computers worldwide. For its damage, it led to significant data loss, forced many companies to shut down email systems temporarily, and caused estimated damages in billions of dollars.

The response was after the outbreaks, antivirus firms quickly developed tools to detect and remove it, and email users became more cautious about opening suspicious attachments. The “I LOVE YOU” virus highlighted the dangers of email-borne malware and led to improvements in cybersecurity awareness and defenses.
