What is Custom ROM? Is it safe? How to install?

Now this topic is for the techies and computer geeks in the house. I have been hearing a few of my friends talking about Custom ROM on their Android phones and how they want to install one custom ROM or the other. I always get bewildered because I don't know what that is.

Please, can someone break down the concept of Custom ROM and it's benefits? How can it be installed in Android phones?

Custom ROMs are made by third party developers rather than factory defaults, of course they have different purposes such as improving features and customization and better performance. To install you need to boot the device into recovery mode and then you can flash a custom ROM to your device.
