What is the difference between a guest house and a hotel as a business?

I have been seeing guest lodges. Some are labelled as guest houses while some are considered as hotels. In mode of operation, and other aspects of business, what makes a hotel different from a guest house?

What are the factors that would make one establish one rather than the other?
