He concept of robots has evolved over time, but the first programmable robot is generally credited to George Devol, who invented the Unimate in the 1950s. Unimate was the first industrial robot designed to perform repetitive tasks in manufacturing like welding and assembly, and it was deployed in General Motors' factory in 1961. So, George Devol is often called the creator of the first practical robot.

These original legendary robots from the 1960s no longer operate today, but they paved the way for modern industrial robots. Some Unimate units are preserved in a museum as important milestones in robotics history. Technology has since evolved significantly, with newer, more advanced robots now widely used in manufacturing around the world. So while the original doesn’t work anymore, its legacy definitely lives on.
