Who is responsible if a user on my site posts illegal contents?

As a website owner, you may not have full control of what users post on your site. And it is possible that a user can just be mischievous and post illegal contents.

Who is responsible if a user posts illegal to contents on a site? The site owner or the user? Any caveat to that?

The user is primarily responsible for any content they post on a site whether legal or illegal. The site is not primarily responsible bb

I think both the users and the website owners would be in for it when illegal and unlawful content is found on such websites

Legally, the creator of illegal content is fully responsible, but you, as the site owner, are also responsible, especially after becoming aware of illegal content, to remove it. Otherwise, the site/platform owner will also be subject to legal sanctions.

I have seen a site taken down because of the illegal contents by users of the site. That means site owners have some responsibilities too.
