When we're waiting in line at the cashier to pay for food or other goods, we're often surprised and embarrassed when the cashier says, "Sorry, your transaction was declined," and everyone's eyes will naturally turn to us.

The phenomenon of credit card declines isn't unique to us; Mariah Carey's card was declined while she was shopping for a Louis Vuitton bag at a luxury boutique. She rushed out of the boutique to withdraw cash from an ATM, but the news spread worldwide. Similarly, Barack Obama and his wife, when they were still US presidents, were having dinner at a restaurant in Manhattan, New York, but when they went to pay, their credit card was declined.

So, as credit card holders, we need to understand the reasons why credit cards can be declined by cashiers so we can avoid embarrassment when paying in front of a cashier. Can you explain the reasons why credit cards are declined?

I have not experienced it. Those cards being declined nigh have error in processing or on hold by the bank. That could be frustrating and shameful when it happens in the paying station.
