Why do smartphone chargers stop working?

I have noticed that a large number of smartphone chargers stop working after some time. Does erratic power supply or surges in power supply damage the charger or is there any other reason why the smartphone charger stops working? How to prevent damage to the chargers?

For me, it is the chord that would suddenly just stop working all of a sudden. And that is mostly because of strain.

Mostly, they imply that they are fake and not original. They likely to come from some other cheap manufacturing companies.
