Why does one have to pay for playing online games on consoles?

I have seen that people have to pay a subscription for them to play online games on the PS like the Ps plus for instance. I would like to know why are they needed to pay even in the paying of those games even when there is no need to pay for servers like for the case of the Minecraft?

I was not aware of this though, but I think it's a way for the company to manage and maintain the servers and from time to time bring in updates and upgrades.

PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo are all companies that charge a fee for you to use their online services. They either offer a one month, three month, six month or on year option and this is done to help the companies keep the servers running.
