Why would an organization force a staff to resign?

In my workplace, the assistant manager has been forced to resign. The company refused to fire him. But they mounted pressure on him to resign. He had to write his resignation letter and put in. Why would a business organization force a staff to resign instead of firing the staff?

When an employee has an issue that is irreconcilable with some top members of management, they might force the employee to resign rather than sack and pay severance fees.
