On Wednesday, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake, described as shallow by the USGS, hit near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. No damage or injuries were reported. Around 6:55 a.m., an earthquake measuring 6.2 miles deep occurred. The earthquake's epicenter was just off the coast of North Sulawesi. The Indonesian meteorological agency measured the earthquake at a lower 6.0 magnitude, eliminating the tsunami risk. This vast island nation's position on the Pacific Ring of Fire—an arc of colliding tectonic plates spanning from Japan, across Southeast Asia, and the Pacific—results in frequent seismic activity.
