Ukraine shocked Russia on June 1 by destroying 34% of its strategic bomber fleet in a drone blitz dubbed "Operation Spiderweb." Using 117 cheap FPV drones, Kyiv hit 41 Russian warplanes, mainly Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers, parked in the open on Siberian airbases. Critics questioned why nuclear-capable bombers were left exposed, with some saying it was due to treaty obligations under New START.
Ukraine also struck two rare A-50 spy planes, key to Russia’s air defences. If confirmed, this marks the most damaging Ukrainian drone attack of the war and a major blow to Moscow’s long-range strike capability.
The Russians were too arrogant to realize Ukraine could plan attacks and keep them safe. Regardless of how many aircraft were hit, the cost is enormous and shows the vulnerability of planes to inexpensive drones. It is a game changer and a great return on investment. War is indeed business.
