Many repairs service providers always prefer to go buy the spare parts of the equipment they are fixing by themselves. They don't like when the customers or clients go to buy the spare parts by themselves.

What could be the possible cause of that?

This is mainly because buying the spare parts is where they make most of their profits from. Most times they don't earn much from workmanship.

Does that mean they add to the price they quote for materials? Is that not unfair on the client? I think they should rather charge for workmanship.

It depends on how you look at it though. Like myself am a graphic designer, when i design a job i go to a printing press for printing, now on a normal day am not supposed to add to the printing price but just take my charges for designing, but here is the problem, most of them tend to under price the designing cost or some would refuse to do the work completely, so in cases like this, i would reduce the designing price and add to the printing price to get my complete profit. Or in some cases to cover other expenses like the cost of transportation and so on.

It is fine if the prices are not exploitative in order to make abnormal profits for yourself. That's reasonable.
