What do I do with the torn and mutilated currency notes?

I am stuck with a torn currency note that was given to me by a cab driver. I didn't check well and I took the currency home. Now, no seller wants to get the currency note from me.

What can one do when they are stuck with torn and mutilated currency notes?

It depends on the mutilated part. When it's essential, I suppose there's no way, unfortunately. Otherwise, you can try to change it in a bank (it works in my country, at least).

I would pay it into a bank if I was the one tat owned such mutilated currency. Nothing else to do with it.

There are ones that are extremely torn and even banks would reject it. If it is the highest denomination of the country's currency, it is the person's loss

Applications for replacement should be submitted to the Central Bank of Nigeria for Nigerians through any of its branches where applicants would be guided on the procedure.

The bank own tools to verify if the notes are authentic and it's only possible, until I know, when the mutilated part isn't essential (what makes the tool able to detect the authenticity).

There's no way out than to go to the apex bank to see if you can gets replacement. You don't necessarily needs to throw them out
