According to the report, a British version of the Iron Dome system could soon patrol UK skies as missile threats continue to evolve.
The report stated that Defense Chief Sir Richard Knighton unveiled their plans for an integrated air and missile defense system designed to intercept Russian ballistic and cruise missiles. He emphasized that a system similar to the well-known Israeli weapon is critical to protecting major cities and infrastructure, noting that the UK has faced a Kremlin-level threat for over 30 years.
Knighton said that the threat has evolved. Russia’s capability and willingness to use ballistic and cruise missiles have become more apparent. He added that it becomes clear that the peace dividend needs to be reversed, and they need to invest more in our radar capability, in their airborne air defense, and also in, ultimately, their ability to shoot down these drones and cruise missiles.
The report also said that if implemented, the UK’s Iron Dome would form part of a multi-layered defense network capable of countering a wide range of aerial threats. It would complement Typhoon fighter jets, which can also shoot down cruise missiles, and Type 45 destroyers built to take down guided missiles.
The report added that beyond the UK, similar Iron Dome-style programs are emerging in other countries. Taiwan is developing its T-Dome system with a sensor-to-shooter network, while Italy’s Michelangelo Dome recently completed its first defense test just a week after debuting.
