IDF said a Military Police investigation was opened into “serious actions during ‘initiation ceremonies’ of veteran soldiers against juniors” in the 136th Air Defense Battalion, which operates the Arrow 2 and 3.

According to the Ynet news site, which first reported the story, the incidents included alleged acts of sodomy and took place over several weeks against around 10 new soldiers in the unit. The report said the veteran soldiers were suspected of abuse, violence, threats, and sex crimes.

According to Ynet, several of the suspects claimed in their initial interrogation that the acts were committed by mutual consent and “in jest.”

The news about the investigation at the 136th Air Defense Battalion is truly worrying. Beyond the attempts to justify the actions as "consensual" or "just a joke," the accusations of abuse, violence, and threats cannot be taken lightly. Personally, I believe that any military institution must guarantee discipline and absolute respect among its members, and these kinds of initiation practices not only damage the integrity of the youngest soldiers but also affect the credibility of the unit. What's most serious is that we're talking about a unit that operates strategic systems like Arrow 2 and 3, which demands the highest level of professionalism. Ultimately, these allegations must be investigated with complete transparency because trust in the armed forces depends on the complete eradication of abusive behavior disguised as tradition or camaraderie.
