Recycling cloths have become a top priority these days for fashion industry. It's very evident that there is a vast waste and pollution caused by fashion industry. The tough new European rules are imminent and they will force clothing companies to use a set amount of recycled fibres in their clothes.
But there are challenges to recycling clothes. It's not easy as it sounds. The French government acknowledges that around 200,000 tonnes of textile wastes is currently being shipped abroad annually. Separating soles from shoes for recycling is a tedious job. Clothes are complex mix of materials. They need to be separated carefully to keep the fibres in good condition to be recycled and respinning them in new garments.
A company in South west of France finally comes with AI to provide the solution to these issues. They have invented a machine that uses AI to scan garments, indentify hard materials like zipper, button etc and use laser to cut them. It has machines that can sort clothes by colour and composition. It has built machine that grabs shoes in a large mechanical arm and yanks off the sole.
Definitely this would make work easier and encourage more and more recycling. A good step towards environment too.
