On Fiverr, you will have to create a gig and then wait for someone to buy that gig. On Upwork, you bid on available jobs and start working once your proposal is accepted. Based on my personal experience, I can say the bidding process can actually help beginners because you can bid with a low rate to attract clients and over deliver to make the client happy. Fiverr, on the other hand, requires patience since you need to wait for someone to find and buy your gig. Even though bidding and selling both are competitive, bidding gives you more control.
