Franchise is a good way for a new business to find it's feet by using the brand of an established player. If the franchise contract expires and the business drops the brand of the franchise and try to build it's brand in same location, would it likely survive?

Nothing is impossible, once there is dedication and quality products, the prospect of success is very possible.

if you are running a franchise business, you cannot run it as your own brand, there will be legal consequences.
I think that franchise contracts expire. What if the business that bought the franchise doesn't want to renew any longer?

Yes it is possible for a business that was once part of a franchise to stand on it's own, though there are procedures the business needs to go through.
