On Wednesday, Cuba began releasing more than a dozen prisoners as part of ongoing negotiations with the Vatican. This move came a day after the Biden administration announced its intention to remove Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Among the released individuals were over a dozen people convicted of various offenses, including some who had participated in the 2021 protests. One of the released prisoners was Reyna Yacnara Barreto Batista, a tattoo artist who received a four-year sentence for public disorder and assault. Batista told The Associated Press that she was released along with eight other men. While Havana did not expressly connect the prisoners’ release to the US decision to remove the designation, it recognized that the move was done in the spirit of the Ordinary Jubilee of the year 2025.
