On Sunday, a senior official stated that the death toll in Mayotte is feared to have reached hundreds, possibly thousands, as France deployed rescue workers and supplies to the affected area. However, the rescue efforts are complicated by damage to airports and disruptions in electricity supply in the French Indian Ocean Territory. Clean drinking water was already in short supply before Cyclone Chido struck.
Prefect Francois-Xavier Bieuville remarked, "I think there will definitely be several hundred, and perhaps we will come close to a thousand or even several thousand deaths." He also noted that determining the final death count is challenging because many Muslims bury their dead within 24 hours in accordance with tradition.
European Union Chief Ursula von der Leyen pledged assistance from the bloc, and the head of the World Health Organization also offered help. Ambdilwahedou Soumaila, the mayor of Mayotte's capital Mamoudzou, reported that nine people are in critical condition in the hospital, with an additional 246 suffering serious injuries. He commented, "The hospital is hit, the schools are hit. Houses are totally devastated." He concluded by stating that the storm had "spared nothing."
