Well, the answer is No. The domain extension itself does not impact your position on search engine rankings. For example, a website using .xyz can still be better than a website with .com site if the website offers better content and is properly optimized. If that is the case, why people focus on getting a .com domain? Well, that is because .com offer better branding as it is most used. What really matters in your website is SEO not the extension.

I think dot com don't offer any better SEO benefit. But it more matured and more popular because it is the first type of domain internet started with. Moreover, it seems more authentic and real unlike other ones. If am given opportunity to choose between dot com and other domains, i will go for dotcom.
