Do you really have to use paid themes

Currently, I am running half a dozen websites and none of my websites uses paid themes. Even though I have used paid themes on my websites in the past, I am not a fan of using paid themes. I mostly like to use free resources to build websites. Well, there are limitation on using free themes but if you have skills to customize your themes, I do not think it is necessary to use a paid theme.
