Don’t accept free rides from strangers - FCT police commissioner warns women

The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory Command, Miller Dantawaye, has warned residents, particularly women, against accepting free rides from strangers.

Dantawaye gave the warning on Friday, January 9, 2025 during a courtesy and advocacy visit by a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association, including representatives of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, NBA Women Forum and Unity Bar, to the FCT Police Command headquarters.

The warning comes after Princess Nwamaka Ochigbo, a lawyer, and Chinemerem Chuwumeziemwere, a nurse at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, were k!lled by suspected one-chance criminals in Abuja.

A statement by the FCT command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the CP urged residents to remain security-conscious, particularly when boarding commercial vehicles.

The police commissioner's warning against accepting free rides from strangers is a stark reminder of the risks we face in everyday life. Personally, I believe that the need to save money or overconfidence often leads us to make potentially dangerous decisions. The recent case of the two women murdered by criminals in Abuja demonstrates that these threats are real and not mere exaggeration. For me, the most important thing is to reinforce safety awareness: always choose reliable means of transport, share your location with family or friends, and avoid situations that unnecessarily expose you to risk. While it may feel awkward to refuse a stranger's "help," personal safety must be the priority. Ultimately, these kinds of warnings are not just official pronouncements, but practical advice that can save lives if applied with discipline and caution.

With the situation of the society today, it has become very hard to help others and to also accept help from others cause we no longer know who is who.
