Rescuers have reported that there are "no signs of life" beneath the debris of a school that collapsed in Indonesia, leaving 59 people unaccounted for. When the two-story Islamic boarding school in the town of Sidoarjo fell on Monday, hundreds of students—mostly teenage boys—were inside. According to officials, at least five student killed and roughly 100 were injured. Since rescue operations started, 13 individuals have been released from the debris, however two of them passed away in the hospital. Because of the building's delicate structure, rescue efforts had been difficult. Shouting and crying were still audible from beneath the debris, according to authorities on Wednesday. That's awful.

What's happening in Indonesia with the collapse of that school in Sidoarjo is truly heartbreaking. Thinking that hundreds of children were inside at the time of the collapse gives one goosebumps, and even worse is reading that dozens are missing with no sign of life beneath the rubble. The situation becomes even more dramatic when we know that several deaths have already been confirmed and that rescuers are facing enormous difficulties due to the fragility of the structure. I imagine the desperation of the families who are still waiting for news, hearing rumors of screams and cries coming from the remains of the building. One can't help but think about the lack of safety controls that perhaps could have prevented such a tragedy. Hopefully, the rescue teams will manage to rescue those still trapped alive and that this disaster will serve to prompt the authorities to strengthen measures for school infrastructure.
