The Nepalese army claims to have removed eleven tons of trash, four corpses, and one skeleton from Mount Everest and two other Himalayan summits this year. It took troops 55 days to recover the trash and bodies from the Everest, Nuptse, and Lhotse summits. It is estimated that more than 50 tonnes of garbage and 200 bodies litter Everest. In 2019, the army began an annual clean-up of the mountain, which is widely referred to as the world's highest waste dump, in response to concerns about overpopulation and climbers queuing in hazardous conditions to reach the peak. According to the army, the five clean-ups collected 119 tonnes of debris, 14 human corpses, and some skeletons.
