I had taken some photos of a relative's photos on 25 December, and now I find that the photos are missing from my smartphone. Has anyone faced this problem with photos disappearing and is there any way to retrieve the deleted photos?

I have never faced any of those you posted about different frauds and like this one now you mentioned. It is never happening in the Philippines.
Since you are comparatively young, you do not have powerful enemies harassing you, the hackers are mainly targetting older people for harassment to rob their savings.

It's not happening in the Philippines. We have strict laws and older citizens are also hard to bully because their are also brave as lions. They will fight.
Fighting the hackers is very time consuming, and online workers making less money do not have the time and money to waste fighting the hackers for free .

I see no reason why hackers would delete pictures from smartphones. It's possible the photos got missing due to virus or it was deleted by mistake.

I've never experienced this, and it's not a common occurrence in our country. I really hope it never happens to anyone. It could be that your smartphone has full storage and can no longer save photos, or maybe it has a virus that needs to be addressed immediately.
Some of the government agencies are allegedly rewarding a fraud young sindhi bank employee, who has been falsely claiming to own my online, bank account to get a monthly government salary allegedly because his school dropout mother is the concubine of top government employees. He may have deleted the photos.
That means some people really live in very dangerous countries. Like in my country l have never heard even a single case like that.
