Have you gotten to know someone by getting them a drink in a bar?

Movies frequently depicted situations like this, where someone requested the waiter to buy a stranger a drink so you could get to know them and they would pay attention. I believe this to be limited to movies, but has anyone actually experienced this?

I don't go to bars, so have never found myself in a situation like this before.

There are many real incidents like that so not only in films, we can offer a drink to the opposite sex as a conversation starter and then introductions then it's up to you.

I have never been in this situation before because I do not frequent bars. The only time I ended up at a bar was when I was with my mom's side of the family.
