Nowadays, organizations really pay attention to the location of a potential staff. In fact, it seems the closer a person is to the workplace, the higher the chances of getting hired.

As a business owner, how do you strike a balance between hiring the best candidate and hiring the candidate who lives closest to the organization?

From my perspective, striking a balance between hiring the best candidate and the one closest to the company is a common challenge in the working world. Personally, I believe location shouldn't be the sole deciding factor, as the candidate's quality, experience, and skills are fundamental to the business's success. However, living nearby can reduce costs and commuting time, which also has its value. The key is to evaluate each case within its context: if a candidate with great potential lives a bit further away, it might be worth considering flexible hours or even offering remote work options on certain days. On the other hand, if proximity facilitates communication and consistent presence, that can be an advantage. Ultimately, I believe the ideal is to find a balance that prioritizes skills and potential without losing sight of logistical convenience.

It is an added advantage that a company employs a staff whose location is easily accessible but it should never be a criterion for employment. It is wise to employ the best hands for the job to be more effective, people with skills and experience should be preferred over the ones living close to the workstation.

A person who is staying in a far location but still comes to apply for a job, then i believe this person might have found a solution on how to deal with the issue of transportation. My job is to simply hire the best that is fit for the business.

As a good business owner, if the candidate is good, just ensure that you pay him or her more than you would pay someone closer.

Choosing the best and most suitable candidate should be the priority. Hong Kong is a compact city, and the transportation infrastructure is excellent. Candidates living closer to the office should not be a factor for consideration.

Your first paragraph is it. One would need to consider the effectiveness of the business first. The transportation cost of the worker is more of a personal thing.
