One of the things they say can give a business good customer relations is the ability for the business to make sure that customers can help themselves if they encounter a problem with the product or service.

How can that be achieved by a business?
 
You can place easy to follow directions. Like in supermarkets, there are directions on where you can find what you are looking for and everything is arranged in an orderly manner.

That's true. Offline businesses should clearly label departments and sections so that a customer can easily find their way around.
 
Provide detailed FAQ on the website, use AI powered intelligent chatbot. But a company should always have a customer service person available should the customer really cannot help himself/herself to solve the problem.
There are some people that are not interested in all those things a business has set up to for customers to support themselves. They just want the assistance of a human agent and that's all.
 
That's why some business put user manual alongside their products. It is not a formality. It should really help customers to self service.
