How can a business identify that there is a skill gap in it's staff team?

For some staff teams, there are gaps in skills that are required for the team to work well but that particular skill is not available in the team. How can a business organization find out if there are gaps in the staff team that it uses to run the business?

When multiple customers keep complaining of the same challenge with the product or service, there is a skill gap that needs to be plugged.

I think the best way to find out is by giving the team some projects to handle, how they perform would determine what is lacking.
