Trade off is a situation where someone has to make one decision from two or more choices, so that he must sacrifice other choices that may be better or worse. In the context of finance, both personal and corporate, it will be related to spending, investment and funding.
Example of trade off in personal finance:
We are often faced with two choices such as buying a house or renting. Buying a house requires a lot of money, so we have to buy it in installments or mortgages, if we rent we have to always pay every month or year and the rental price often goes up. As freelancers we don't have much money, so which one do you think is better?
