How much truth of a bad situation should you let your staff know?

Bad situations happen in business and to some extent, staff have to be carried along on how things have turned out.

How do you decide the level of truth of a bad situation that staff should know about to avoid panic?

Good question. I'd say all of it, but of course some people will say just enough. I suppose it depends on each person's strategy and planning.

Just let them know only the details that would affect their work as staff. Don't induce panic and try to communicate solutions more.

I share information with people based their position and job. only talk things that are related to job security. hide the rest prevent pressure and fear at work. I weigh seriousness of the issue before giving full story.

If there is a chance that the details of the bad situation can lead to low morale on the staff, just tell them the surface.
