How to access bank account of hospitalized citizen?

If a single senior citizen is hospitalized and may not be able to sign documents, how can the relatives access their bank account to pay the hospital expenses? What is the normal procedure followed in these cases?

This is a difficult situation. If the person is hospitalized and cannot sign any documents, it is very difficult for another person to access his/her account unless the hospitalized person has authorized someone to access the account before his hospitalization.

I think that every bank account has a next of kin that is named to that account. The next of kin would always be able to access the account. Even unmarried people should have next of kin.

If the bank account of the sick person also has an ATM a family member can withdraw anytime as long as there's money in it. As far as my observation is concerned, as soon as one opens an account, he or she is granted with two documents the ATM and passbook.
