It depends on the job. If the amount of time you spend at work is a direct measure of your value to the company, hourly makes sense. If half of your professional inspiration comes to you while you're showing in the morning, your job should probably be salaried.
It can also depend on the person. I've found that I have a much better attitude about work when I'm hourly. On a salary, I resent days that are unusually busy, and feel guilty when the workload is unusually light
