Is it safe to buy goods online using a debit card?

I often read about the disadvantages/risks for debit card holders when shopping online. While a debit card will be directly connected to a bank account. Is it possible for someone else to use a debit card for shopping. So in your opinion, what are the risks of shopping online using a debit card?
