Is it wrong for artisans and to ask for advanced payment for orders?

Artisans like carpenters, welders, fashion designers and the lots always ask for advanced payment before they start working on your order. Is it a wrong thing to ask for advanced payment from a customer before you touch an order?

No it's not wrong, I am a graphic designer and most times I usually ask for advance payment before starting a job. I have had a lot of experience where the customer refuses to pay after doing the job. Or some completely change their minds after you have used your time and energy to do it.

That's the challenge. But some customers would now blackmail you that when you ask for advanced payment, you are only interested in the money.

No, not at all. I think it is the money that would be used to build some of the needed utens for the work. So advance payment is necessary

Some artisans would need to buy materials to deliver the job to you. A fashion designer has to buy zip, threads and even, lining. Advanced payments is necessary.
