According to the report, Army K9 units won public admiration for their role in locating the bodies of two landslide victims in Quezon, Bukidnon, after a five-day search. The bodies of the couple, Ely and Thelma Ubatay, were recovered on Thursday by joint search and rescue teams with the help of the dogs named Miyuki, Venom, Paul, and Bella.

The report also stated that Miyuki is the search and rescue dog from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Opol, Misamis Oriental. She was the first to locate the victims’ locations.

The report also said that Army Capt. Ariel Asentista, civil-military operations officer of the 89th Infantry Battalion, said the K9s Venom, Bella, and Paul were trained by the 403rd Infantry Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division and the 1003rd Infantry Brigade of the 10th Infantry Division. He said the Army's K9 units are primarily deployed for bomb detection but are also trained for search and retrieval operations during calamities. The K9 teams assisted the local disaster risk reduction office in the search that began on October 19.

The Ubatays were the only casualties of the landslide that occurred the evening of Oct. 18. The local government said they would be laid to rest on Thursday.

From my perspective, the army's canine units demonstrated exemplary heroism and effectiveness in an emergency situation as difficult as a landslide. The work of dogs like Miyuki, Venom, Paul, and Bella not only highlights the importance of specialized training for these animals but also underscores how their assistance can mean the difference between life and death in natural disasters. The participation of these teams in search and rescue operations, in addition to their explosives detection training, demonstrates their versatility and strategic value in a variety of emergency scenarios. This public recognition of their work also helps raise awareness about the importance of collaboration between the armed forces, local authorities, and the community in disaster response. Ultimately, these dogs and their handlers represent a crucial resource in protecting and recovering human lives in situations of calamity.
