According to the report, a tragic explosion ripped through a mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, during evening prayers on Christmas Eve. At least five people were killed and several others injured when a suspected suicide bomber targeted worshippers in the fully-packed Gamboru Market mosque.
The report also said that while no group has yet claimed responsibility, authorities suspect the hand of Boko Haram, a terrorist group notorious for utilising suicide bombers to terrorise Northeastern Nigeria. This latest violence underscores the persistent security crisis facing President Bola Tinubu’s administration. It follows a devastating pattern of coordinated attacks in the region, including last year’s triple suicide bombing in Borno that claimed over 30 lives.
The report added that despite the government’s recent pledge to allocate $3.7 billion toward a national security revamp, this attack highlights the significant challenges that remain in ending a nearly two-decade conflict that has displaced millions.
